If we were looking for a new homeowner's challenge, we certainly found it in our first major project of upgrading the upstairs bathroom.
Here's some of the 'before' pictures. I thought we had more pics of this room, but apparently we couldn't stand the horror:

Don't you love the black floor tile on the wall?
Yes, that's a window on the right - nearly touching the floor. |

Fake stonework hid vent pipes and water pipes. |

And the other two walls had fake wood paneling... |
With all the fake wood and floor tile removed from the walls, we got... yellow!
Then came the biggest surprise of all. We knew that the toilet leaned a little to the right, and were worried that the floor underneath was rotten. Well, that was sort of true - the toilet had been balanced on its pipe, with nothing really solid holding up that side but several layers of linoleum...

And still under... |
To fix that, our handyman and I put in lots of wooden braces at various angles, since the pipes interfered with putting in straight joists:

Starting to look better. |
After that came two layers of plywood (3/4" and 1/4" inch) to put in a new floor even with the old one.
The same thing happened with the bathroom sink, too, so we put a new floor and reinforcements in there, too:

Here's the sink floor piece that will go around the hot and cold pipes. |
